Psychosocial Functional Capacity Assessment

Psychosocial Functional Capacity Assessment

A psychosocial functional capacity assessment looks at how well a person can handle everyday tasks and identifies which tasks are made more difficult by their disability.

Tasks like running a household, holding down a job, and socialising with friends and family can be hard for someone with a psychosocial disability, leading to significant challenges and trouble participating in the world.

When doing the NDIS psychosocial functional capacity assessment, the goal is to outline the specific support an individual needs to fully take part in their life and community. According to the NDIS, any allied health professional has the ability to carry out a psychosocial functional capacity assessment. It has been observed that social workers are well-suited to draw clear conclusions while doing these assessments. Their education and training enable them to recognise intersecting barriers and understand the broader circumstances of individuals needing a psychosocial functional capacity assessment.

Social workers, as well as using strengths-based and trauma-informed approaches, are also well-equipped to meet participants in various challenging circumstances, such as those involved in the justice or child protection system, experiencing homelessness, or struggling with substance abuse.

Regardless of the specific diagnosis, whether it is schizophrenia, FASD, anxiety, or mood disorders, the same functional capacity assessment framework will be used. We make use of specific evidence-based tools such as the WHODAS, HoNOS, Skills Profile, and Mental State Examination for psychosocial functional capacity assessments.

While there is no specific assessment tailored to each diagnosis, such as a borderline personality disorder functional capacity assessment, our assessors may use additional assessments, such as the Carers Burnout Scale, to provide further evidence of the support required.
